There will be times, especially in the car, with my sons, when I will find myself in the middle of quite a long soliloquy. These speeches cover various topics such as “What’s Wrong with the World Today” and “If You Even Knew How Good You Had It”, which both support and is a counter speech to “The 80’s was the Best Decade Known To Mankind.” All these orations rival Marc Antony’s “Friends, Romans, Countryman” Speech.
As I pull into our driveway, my young teen son says, “Yes, Mom. I’ve already heard this Ted Talk before.”
This is when I come out of the stupor of my speech and the three of us all start laughing because who knows how this all began in the first place, but here we are---again.
My son tells me, “The thing is mom, I totally agree with you. On most of it. You’re preaching to the choir. I’ve just heard it before.”
And I know he has.
I’ve also heard his Ted Talks. The one about “How That One Kid At School is So Annoying” which is very similar to “How That Teacher At School is So Annoying.”
And I realize that we all have Ted Talks.
I’ve started asking friends and family about this. Oh yeah, of course I have one they say.
Troy says he gives one on “How We Ought to Have a Purge of People Who Don’t Use Headphones in Public Spaces!” I agree and I think if he could just give that talk to more people, the world would be a better place.
Sara gives one on “Why a Baby Carrier is Much More Important Than A Stroller”. I think I need to hear this one because I might be firmly on the “A Stroller is Much More Important than a Baby Carrier” but then I had really fat babies.
Jane has a classic talk on “Why Can’t People Just Google the Answer to Their Question Instead of Asking A Simple Question on Facebook." And I think if we knew the answer to that question, the answer to the universe would be wrapped inside.
And Tulip regularly gives a talk on “The Correct Way to Load the Dishwasher!” Spoiler, it’s her way.
If you know me, you know I continually watch the show Mad Men in a loop. I am currently in the midst of my 12th viewing of the show. Last night, on Season 4, Episode 5 “The Chrysanthemum and the Sword” Don Draper asks Dr Faye Miller the question that explains all these Ted Talks and also supports my frequent talk “Everything You Need To Know About Me or Life or Anything In-between Can Be Found on the AMC show Mad Men.”
Don: Why does everyone need to talk about everything?
Faye: I don’t know but they do and when they talk, they feel better.

Please share your frequent Ted Talk in the comments so we can all laugh.
I don’t listen to Ted Talks and despise instagram (mainly because I can’t get a full photo on my iPad and I don’t know how to download the recipes🙂. However, I enjoy your posts. It makes me realize I’m just another human being who is trying to pray and get through life every day.
Shemaiah you say, “Jane has a classic talk on “Why Can’t People Just Google the Answer to Their Question Instead of Asking A Simple Question on Facebook." And I think if we knew the answer to that question, the answer to the universe would be wrapped inside.”
And you are right -- the answer is locked inside. We ask on Facebook for the same reason we pray, because we want to know that somebody, our friends, God (“the universe”) is listening to our question. We don’t just want the information, we want an answer. We want to be in relationship, and not feel like we’re out her on our own. It’s the same need.
